Do you need planning permission for a garage conversion?
In most cases, no. Here is when you do.
In most cases planning permission is not required, and around 99% of garage conversions fall under permitted development.
You may need it if your home is a listed building, is in a conservation area, is a new build under six years old, has a roof more than 4 metres to the ridge, if the garage footprint is more than half the house, or if the garage sits further from the house than the public highway.
If any of those apply, phone your local planning department and ask for written confirmation. Once you have it, we can go ahead.
Either way, the work needs building control sign-off for structure, damp proofing, insulation and ventilation. We handle that with an approved inspector.
